You need a learning licence if…
- You've never held a driving licence in India
- You want to add a new vehicle class to an existing licence — for example you hold a two-wheeler licence and now want to drive a car
- Your previous learning licence expired before you took the driving test
A learning licence lets you practise on public roads, provided a person holding a valid permanent licence for that vehicle class is with you, and the vehicle displays an 'L' plate.

Identity & age
- Aadhaar card
- PAN card (where applicable)
- Birth certificate, school leaving certificate or passport as age proof
Address
- Aadhaar, passport, utility bill or rent agreement
- Must match the address you're applying from
Photographs & signature
- Recent passport-size photographs
- Signature specimen
Declarations
- Self-declaration of physical fitness (Form 1)
- Medical certificate (Form 1A) if you're over 40 or applying for a transport class
- Your blood group
What actually happens

Documents checked
We go through everything before submission. Most rejections come from a mismatch nobody noticed at this stage.

Application filed and slot booked
We submit online and book your learning licence test appointment.

You take the test
A short multiple-choice test on road signs and traffic rules. We'll give you practice material beforehand — most people who prepare for an hour pass comfortably.

Licence issued
Your learning licence is issued and is valid for six months. Start your driving lessons straight away — you can apply for the permanent licence after 30 days.
Why learning licence applications get rejected
Name spelled differently
Your name on Aadhaar doesn't exactly match your school certificate or PAN. This is the single most common cause.
Address proof out of date
You've moved and the document still shows the old address.
Age proof not accepted
Not every document counts as valid age proof — we'll tell you which of yours does.
Failing the rules test
People underestimate it and don't revise the road signs. Twenty minutes of preparation usually prevents this.
